BUDDY

SCOOTER

We have two birds: A parakeet named Buddy and a cinnamon female cockatiel
named Scooter.
Buddy is the resident clown and sort of a three-ring circus in a bird cage.
And he will put on a show for anyone that comes over to the house. All he
needs is a little attention, someone to say "Good bird, Bud", and he is off
and running. He also sings and warbles when music is on (he especially
likes country music).
Scooter is quite the character also. She thinks she is supposed hang out
on Dad's shoulder whenever dad is home . She shares dinner with us at the
table and eats most of the stuff that we eat. Although she doesn't talk,
she has about 8 or 10 different "chirps" that we have been able to identify
as her wanting different things. I know that she is communicating with me,
because if you ask her if she wants this or that, she responds with the
same type of chirp every time for each particular item or activity. She
is very affectionate, and likes to kiss Dad on the cheek or preen the hair
on the back of my neck.

I am responding to your email of 04/08/07 where you were requesting a
story about birds as pets. I have enclosed a picture of my blue-fronted
amazons - (Samantha and Sonny). The picture was taken at Moto-photo
where they had a pet contest and they won. Sam is the one on the left
and Sonny is on the right. They are 25 years old. I've had them since
they were 8 months old. They have quite a good life here - very
spoiled. They love to sit on the couch with us and watch tv at night.
They like to watch game shows. Anything with laughing and excitement
so they laugh too. When Sam wants me to put the radio on, she sings "la
la la". They love music, so I always have the radio on and they like to
watch American idol also. I put them to bed around 9:30pm and they
actually want to go to sleep.

They get up around 10:00am, eat breakfast. Then they walk around for a
little while get some exercise. Sometimes, if the weather is nice - I
will take them outside. They love going outside. I put them on a tree
in the backyard and they don't want to leave. I am looking to buy a pet
stroller for them to take them to the park. When I leave for work, they
say "bye, bye I love you". They take a 2 - 3 hr nap every day around
2:30pm. They like routine. They only go to the cage to take nap or
sleep or if I have to go out - otherwise they are out on the perch.

They eat just about everything we eat - we don't eat junk food. They
eat very little of their own seeds, as they would rather have what I'm
eating - so I always share my food with them. They like to eat peppers
and greens and carrots and quinoa and cooked organic corn. They like
apples, pears, bananas, mangoes and tangerines. They like fish also,
tuna, salmon. Also like chicken bones and meatballs. Sonny and Sam are
the joy of my life and I wouldn't trade them for any other kind of pet.
Regards,
Monica

Hi there,

My name is Michelle and i have been getting your news letters for a long time. I must say i enjoy reading them and i also get very good tips for help myslef look after my birds and give advice to other people when they ask me about wanting to get a bird...I must say when people ask me and are oh so very excited after seeing my parrots and say oh i want or i have to have one now, most of the time i say NO you do not want a parrot LOl. I love my birds and would never give them up, but i realy agree with you that most people can not handle how much work they are. I really wish i lived in the area as you and you husband, I would love to help out around your place with the birds and help out, but we dont even live in the same country. Never know maybe i will come on a vaction there sometime and look you up. Well what i am writing about is simple, i work from home and i do have alot of time, so if you would liek me to help me out with the boards and such i would be more then happy too. I would just need to know what you would liek me to do. I also thought i would just tell you about my birds aswell.

I have two. They both Talk ALOT. One is 6 years old and the other is 2. We took Jake in after he was left at a pet store with no hope of being adopted out because he Bits like crazy and he hates men. We got Lexie from a lady that thought she wanted a baby bird but didnt like the noise. Now they live with me. So i Have 2 parrots, 4 dogs, 4 cats, so i have a house full. I work at home looking after 10 older ladies with a mential disability, they live in my home with me. Which gives me lots of time to be with my animals and my daughter who is 8 years old. Over the past few years we have gotten to know what Jake and Lexi Really love, everytime my daughter would watch Barney or the wiggles or Dora they would go wild and scream and sing and it was just nuts i really thoguht i was at the zoo. So to make them happy i got the a TV and they love it. they have learned so much and so many songs and words, its great. Jake Loves to tease my cats, he will yell "here Kitty Kitty" and when the cat even walks past his playroom he yells "HELP ME" ( he does this with the dogs to or if he is board and wants me to run in and see what is wrong with him ) This summer i am going to build Jake and Lexie a outdoor play house, i have the frame all made so i just need to get the trees and such to place inside i think they will really love it, i am sure they want to be outside and be able to play. I use to take Lexie outside with me, until one day she got away from me and i have to climb a tree to get her down. I will send you a picture of the birds with the email, and i hope to hear from you soon. If there is anytime i can do to help please just ask. You and your husband have given so much to all of us i would love to be able to give something back to you even if its just time to help out.

Hugs till later,

Take care Michelle
