Reviews \"Wow! This book is a gem. Packed with information and good insight, it needs to be a part of every pet bird owner\'s library. Dr. Gallerstein has done it again!\"

— Brian Speer, DVM

Dipl. ABVP, ECAMS

Co-author, The Large Macaws and Birds for Dummies

\"The Complete Pet Bird Owner\'s Handbook is a valuable addition to the home library. It encompasses a broad range of practical information from behavior and diet, to recognizing various illnesses and quickly stabilizing medical emergencies during those important minutes it takes to get to the veterinarian. Those new to bird \'parenthood\' will learn much from it and veteran bird \'parents\' will find The Complete Pet Bird Owner\'s Handbook a quick and valuable source of reference.\"

— Chris Davis, \"The Bird Lady,\" companion bird behavior consultant

Author of Demystifying Pet Bird Behavior

Co-author, Training Your Parrot the Alex Way

\"I thoroughly enjoyed the 3rd edition of Dr. Gallerstein\'s great book. I have recommended his book for my clients for years and look forward to offering the new edition to my bird-owning clients. This book is definitely a must-have for bird owners. I strongly recommend it.\"

— Amy B. Worell, DVM, ABVP

\"The contents of the The Complete Pet Bird Owner\'s Handbook are as good as the dramatic book cover promises. Dr. Gallerstein has made the third edition of the handbook user-friendly, and it\'s full of current information in this rapidly growing field. This book should be in the library of anyone with an interest in pet birds, including bird owners, aviculturists and veterinarians. The book is comprehensive, covering topics such as selecting a bird, proper caging and furnishing the cage, avian anatomy and physiology, basics of bird breeding, avian veterinary care, and when birds and owners part. The chapter on medical emergencies is particularly helpful because it begins with a table that lists the common avian emergencies with a rating of 1–3 stars to determine how quickly veterinary care is needed. Conveniently, there is an index of signs of illness observed by bird caretakers, with pages in the textbook that cover that subject. There is also a general index.

The new edition comes nine years after the second edition. Although there are parts of the text that have not changed, this new edition is easier to navigate and contains more information in the areas that are currently of greatest interest. The chapter on behavior has tripled in size and covers many more species, including a section on behavior of finches and canaries. The book contains more than 120 additional pages, compared with the second edition. This reasonably priced book is a valuable reference to have on the shelf.\"

— Rhoda Stevenson, DVM, ABVP

AP270273 GOOD BIRD! A GUIDE TO SOLVING BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS IN COMPANION PARROTS
AP270273 GOOD BIRD! A GUIDE TO SOLVING BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS IN COMPANION PARROTS

A professional in animal behavior has created an easy-to-read step-by-step guide that uses positive reinforcement for teaching your parrot acceptable behavior. This book will help you deal with screaming, biting, feather-picking, bonding, and other difficult parrot behaviors. Chapters include Preparing the Companion Parrot Owner, Screaming, Biting, Bonding to One Person, Cage Bound Bird, and Feather Picking.

Training is a form of teaching. The companion parrot learns when the trainer positively reinforces (or rewards) each small step the subject takes towards the desired behavior. Using the principles described in training, it becomes easy to teach birds what is the desired response. The beauty of training using positive reinforcement is that it works! In this book the author prepares the trainer in the first chapter. She then describes some typical problem behavior scenarios experienced by companion parrot owners. She then provides an explanation as to why the behavior may be occurring and offers a step-by-step explanation of how to address the problem behavior using training techniques based on positive reinforcement.

Barbara Heidenreich has been a professional in the field of animal behavior since 1990. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology she began her career teaching birds to present natural behaviors in zoos. In her fourteen years of working for various zoos, companies, and as an independent consultant, Barbara has been involved in the production of over fifteen different free flight bird presentations. Currently the President Elect of the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators she is now a private animal training consultant working with zoological parks, nature centers, and the companion parrot community. Barbara hopes everyone can experience that truly rewarding relationship that can happen when animals are trained using positive reinforcement.
