- - "Cockatoos and African Greys: Are they Really So Different? By: Sam Foster (cockatoos) & Jane Hallander (African greys) This article has been reprinted from The Pet Bird Report, with permission from the authors. How many times have you heard these words.... African greys are feather pickers; Cockatoos demand your constant attention and if they don’t get it, they will scream all day, or start plucking; If you want a bird that talks, you have to get a grey, but watch out, they're one person birds; Don’t buy a Major Mitchell’s or a Rose- breasted...they’re all neurotic; My grey used to like me, but now he's bonded to my husband and hates me; My Umbrella used to be a love sponge, that’s why I bought it. But now he’s become aggressive and bites me whenever I try to pick him up; Greys aren't as cuddly as cockatoos; Cockatoos aren’t as smart as greys? "

We frequently hear a cockatoo or African grey owner express concern that their bird is exhibiting phobic behavior. This can be anything from a bird that throws itself on its back in a fight or die position when the owner comes into the room, to a parrot who runs away when the human tries to take it out of the cage. In these instances, it is critical for both the owner and the behaviorist to make every effort to determine that a true phobia actually exists before offering advice or recommendations. "

- - "Behavior Compatibility: Living In Harmony With Companion Parrots By Sam Foster and Jane Hallander This article is reprinted from Issue #43 of The Pet Bird Report with permission from the authors. During the 1950s BF Skinner, a prominent psychologist, became the model for animal trainers, who adapted their mostly domesticated charges to Skinner’s rules of behavior modification. Successful with many animal species, Skinner’s principles have extended into present-day animal behavior theories. Many well-known animal, including avian, behavioral consultants still advocate Skinner’s basic premises of conditioned response and patterning. Some even refer to themselves as behaviorists, a term that more aptly suits human psychologists and doctorates who follow Skinner’s rules. However, some animal species "

- - "Preventing Phobias In Companion Parrots By Jane Hallander We behavior consultants are seeing far too many cases of phobic parrots, who come from loving households but have become frightened to the point of fearing death from their human companions. As we raise more companion parrots for the pet trade, this problem will only grow unless we understand why it happens and educate new parrot owners about how to prevent it. Why do parrots, especially certain species, become phobic? As everyone knows, there are predators - animals that eat other animals - and the rest of the animal kingdom. Parrots fall into the latter category, commonly referred to as prey animals. They have evolved into species with have genetic instincts and learned behavior patterns that allow them to identify their natural enemies and protect themselves - by fleeing or the natural camouflage of a flock of grey, rose colored or white birds blending together as if they were one. Sometimes we must learn to think and talk parrot to further the trust relationship between us. Talking parrot includes the use and understanding of one of the most important parts of a wild parrot's life -- contact calls. Contact calls back and forth between parrot and human help reassure the parrot that its human is within earshot, as would be a wild flock member. They give parrots a way to let us know when they want our immediate attention. Contact "

- So you want a Pet Bird... by Kim Bear
- ""HI!!" This is the enthusiastic greeting I receive every morning at my house. It comes from Bijou, my Blue and Gold Macaw. He is one of the many parrots in our home, and life is never dull (or quiet) around here because of their constant activity and chatter. If you're thinking of adding a new companion to the family, you might consider getting a bird. Your life may never be the same. "
