| Karlene has an extensive background with cockatiels in ownership,
breeding, behavior issues and rescue. While stationed at Hickam AFB in Hawaii, she did wild bird rehabilitation in addition to cockatiel and parrot rescue. She managed and maintained a display atrium located on Hickam AFB which gained her basewide recogniton for her volunteer work regarding the atrium. Karlene has been a speaker at local elementary schools in Hawaii on avian education. She does her own cultures and was assisted by the state laboratory in Hawaii to discuss results. Karlene's research work is focused on avian medicine, diseases, nutrition and behavior issues in preparation for board certification with the ABVP. Years of research have focused Karlene on the pelleted diet and the controversy surrounding it have been a focal point for her and will be documented in an upcoming article. Currently, Karlene is employed at the University of Florida and attending college part-time. Her avian companions include Pickle - Severe Macaw, Puffin Girl - Umbrella Cockatoo, Cookie Loo - Moluccan Cockatoo, Reebok - (rescue) Lesser Sulfur Crested Cockatoo, Chico - Blue Fronted Amazon. Her little tweeters include 6 Cockatiels, with the oldest "Charge" traveling, with her, to Massachusetts, New York, Nebraska, Hawaii and now Florida. email Karlene |
