Birdie Bread
2 cups whole wheat flour (or any kind of flour you like)
1 cup cornmeal
½ cup instant oats
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
½ cup chopped/pureed nuts
½ cup dried fruit
½ cup-1 cup bird pellets (can be chopped in food processor so birds don’t pick it out)
1-2 eggs with crushed/broken shell
½ cup frozen or fresh veggies
½ cup frozen or fresh fruit
¼ cup-1/2 cup cooked pasta (any kind)
1-4 jars of baby food (fruit or veggie)
Juice or water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add chopped or pureed nuts, dried fruits and pellets, mix. Add eggs and any wet ingredients (fresh/frozen veggies, fruit, pasta, baby food), mix. Add juice or water until batter is a thick cake-batter consistency.
Pour batter into greased loaf pan or muffin tin.
Bake for 25-35 min (loaf pan) or 15-20 min (muffin tin)
Use a toothpick to check if it is done.
Let cool and freeze or serve after it cools a little! (Clean up birdie mess when your birdie digs in!)
All ingredients are optional and may be substituted for other ingredients, or add more!
Other potential ingredients:
Steamed yams, steamed squash, bird seed, canned foods, edible flowers/plants, popped and unsalted/unbuttered popcorn, etc.
Birdie Mash
2-3 Yams (steamed and mashed)
1-2 Whole Squash (any kind, steamed and mashed)
1 small Pumpkin (optional, can be used as a substitute for the squash, steamed and mashed)
3-4 cups mixed frozen veggies (steamed)
1/2 lb of cooked pasta (any style, I prefer garden rotini or something with a fun shape)
2 teaspoons curry mix seasoning
1 teaspoon cayenne powder
pinch of salt (only a pinch, too much is bad for your bird but a pinch will bring out the flavors of the ingredients)
Mix all together and freeze in snack sized plastic bags. Serve warm!
